So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore

I’ve just finished reading a book by the above title authored by Wayne Jacobson & Dave Coleman. Through fictitious narrative, these two men address the heart cry of many who have become disillusioned with the institutional church. As a member and leader in said church for almost 50 years and often one of its greatest critics, this portrayal provides a necessary reminder of what it means to be a Christ follower and the values that are truly important as we attempt to adhere to the admonition to “not forsake the assembling together of ourselves”.

If you are one of the many who have quit “going to church” or dread “going to church” and have not understood why, it would be worth your time to read this book. If you are one of the many who are totally fulfilled in your present church experience, it will help you understand those who are on the other side.

You’ll need to resist the urge to villainize the church as you have known it and the tendency to swing to an extreme in response. We all know there is no perfect solution this side of eternity. Nevertheless, this account calls us to “be the church”, not just “go to church”. May the Lord grant us His grace and wisdom to do just that.

  1. So why dont you just go ahead and post a blog entry that reads "HERE CHRIS...THIS IS FOR YOU". But we often think its all about us dont we? Your recommendation is enough to make me want to check it out. Thanks.

  2. I am reading the last chapter and have thoroughly enjoyed the whole book! It addressed some thoughts of my heart that I had felt guilty about. When reading this book, I discovered that those thoughts were just a stirring from Father to take a closer look. Thanks for these comments. It confirms what Bob & I feel. I agree with your comment about villianizing the church, too. It would be easy to do if you are not cautious. We are seeking Father's grace and wisdom on how to walk this out...La Donna

  3. Rick, Thanks for your thoughtful review. I read this book about 2 years ago and it really touched something deep inside me. Learning how to "be" the church instead of just fulfilling a religious obligation of "going" to church and saying and doing all the right things is indeed a difficult journey. The church, rightly defined, is every believer. It is the body and bride of Christ. It is not a building, nor is it a time to be at a building on a certain day. As believers, we are all on the same team. No wonder there are so many verses devoted to us not devouring each other. We need to love and support each other where ever we are on the journey with Christ. With that said, we also need those with the prophetic gift to point out where we as the body are going astray. We need to learn to listen intently to the Holy Spirit and swallow our pride and obey what we hear him saying. If that is leaving the institutional church, then OK. If that is working within the institutional church, then OK. Lets support each other and trust the all knowing God with the rest. Blessings.
